In January, 2020 I had the privilege of having a solo art show at the General Motors Tech. Center. I have been working as a sculptor there for the past 7 years, and it was so wonderful to be able to share what I do outside of work with my fellow employees and loved ones. The Following is the artist statement about the show, which was so personal to me.

“Phases of Us”

My fascination with the moon and the impact that its orbit has on human experience has inspired the show “Phases of Us”. As a child I used to make my mother go through the phases of the moon over and over and over with me for fun. Back then it was a way for me to connect with my mother, and now as an adult I look up and see the night sky as what connects us all. The moon reminds us to bring mother earth back to balance with intuition, receptivity, and emotional release. One sky, one world, one existence of all humanity.

The concept of “Phases of Us” returns back to healing through human connection. Through this connection, we can turn something that was once painful into an expression of beauty. As I created pieces for a friend about her new perspective on life after battling cancer, I found that I could also receive just as much love as I was putting into it. My connection with her provided growth and healing in my own life as well as hers. Heal the earth; let the earth heal you.

The sphere is a constant reminder of how far I have come in life as a woman. To me it is a symbol of female power, unity, and cycles. There is a zen saying, Nothing left out. This is the embodiment of every single phase I have gone through as an artist, and in life. Everything is connected to everything else, “us” is the existence of the whole world and being where we are now, embracing where we’ve been, but also allowing for change.
